Chemicals in Cosmetics, Lotions, Shampoo - Should We Be Concerned?

Unfortunately, our skin is far from the perfect barrier. It does a marvelous job of protecting the body from bacteria, viruses and other pathogens. However, evolution has not prepared us for lab-designed, synthetic chemicals. Many of these chemicals are specifically designed to be absorbed more effectively through our skin. Entering easily through our pores and mucous membranes, these chemicals pass into the bloodstream to various organs and tissues.

Should We Be Concerned?

Many top scientists and environmentalists are becoming increasingly concerned about the chemicals in personal care products, with good reason. Most of these chemical ingredients have not been tested for long-term safety. Many have been show to be harmful in scientific tests. (Dingle & Brown, 1999) Some are carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, allergens, and much more.

The concern stems from the statistics, which are alarming: According to the Environmental Working Group, since the 1970-1980s:

-Autism has increased tenfold
-Incidence of male birth defects have doubled
-Incidence of childhood asthma has doubled
-62% increase in childhood leukemia
-40% increase in childhood brain cancer
-23% increase in pre-term birth
-Incidence of testicular and prostate cancer have doubled

-5-10% of couples experience infertility
-3-5% of all babies suffer from birth defects
-1 in 7 women will get breast cancer
Are synthetic chemicals to blame? It is unknown at this point. But what is certain is that we are exposed to a multitude of synthetic chemicals each day that our bodies are not equipped to handle. A number of these chemicals have been definitively linked to harmful health effects, such as cancer or endocrine disruption. Yet this information has pretty much kept quiet by our government and the manufacturers of the products that contain them.

Does the Government Protect Us?

After the Environmental Working Group (EWG) exposed the harmful effects of the commonly used chemical Bisphenol A (contained in baby bottles, baby formula and the lining of canned food), it became particularly clear that our government has not been protecting the public health. Large corporations, with their incredible lobbying power, have been the ones protected. These companies put hazardous ingredients into their products in the name of cutting costs and increasing profits, hoping that the consumer won't realize the dangers inherent in the use of these chemicals. Meanwhile, they earnestly deny their ingredients are harmful. (Malkin, 2007)

By far the worst offender is the cosmetics industry, which includes manufacturers of shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, shaving creams, cosmetics and baby care products. The list of toxic chemical ingredients in cosmetics and personal care products is alarming, to say the least. But the list of harmful ingredients in baby lotion, baby shampoo, bubble bath, and sunscreen is downright criminal. (EWG, 2008)

Under federal law and regulations, the FDA and the United States government cannot require companies to test cosmetic products for safety before marketing, and does not have the power to review or approve products or ingredients before they are sold. They cannot require recalls, and must go to court to remove products from store shelves. (Malkin, 2007)

Product safety is evaluated through a voluntary program called the Cosmetic Industry Review (CIR), which is run by the cosmetic companies themselves. Literally, it is asking the wolves to guard the sheep. If you analyze the ingredients in cosmetics, it is obvious that the cosmetic companies do not even follow the guidelines recommended by their own Cosmetic Industry Review panel. (Gabriel, 2008) Does this sound like adequate protection to you?

According to Environmental Working Group,

This complete absence of accountability to a responsible government agency has...created a culture of ignorance around personal care products, where far too little is known about ingredient safety. (Jane Houlihan, EWG, May 2008)

Finding Cheap Cosmetic Surgery That Is Reputable Too

We all like looking good but when something goes wrong due to aging or an accident, then cosmetic surgery is often sought. However, cosmetic surgery is often expensive and with our economy still doing poorly, many have a need to find cheap cosmetic surgery but also surgery that is professional and effective. Cosmetic surgery has two categories: cosmetic surgery that improves the appearance of a person and reconstructive plastic surgery that improves the functional parts of a person.

The first thing to do when looking for a reputable and inexpensive plastic surgery is to do some searching. Begin by making appointments with several plastic surgeons. Some of this can be done online and some by visiting them in person. When you talk or visit online, be sure to have at your disposal certain questions on the services they provide and of course, asking about the cost. Most importantly, look carefully at the kinds of procedures they offer, in comparison to what procedures you want and need. You also need to find out what kind of care you will receive once the procedure has been completed. In some cases, the care that is given after the surgery is quite high. So, be sure to find out about the after-care procedures. Also, keep in mind that some surgeons offer discounts with plastic surgery and have payment options that help the patient when paying the bills for care.

Another way to find out about the cost of cosmetic surgery and the reputation of the surgeon is to talk with the hospital administrator, patients who have had treatment from the surgeon, friends and family but someone you can trust rather than just a chat room or social network site. In addition, several online medical sites can also give you information on the background of doctors. Some also use a referral service to find out about a surgeon or doctor.

In addition, another thing you can do is ask to see examples of the plastic surgeon's work. When looking at past examples of the surgeon's work, you should be able to see examples of the kind of surgery you are looking for, find out if your expectations are too high or normal and if the standards of the surgery are acceptable to you. The cosmetic surgeon you choose should also be accredited qualified and highly experiences. And, always ask any questions that are on your mind.

Keep in mind, too, that sometimes there are complications and side effects that are not pleasant. Be sure to find out what can go wrong and the kinds of side effects to expect and how long they will last.

Do not be afraid to ask questions. A qualified and reputable cosmetic surgeon should be happy and willing to explain all aspects of the cosmetic surgery. Don't allow yourself to be pressured by the surgeon or his staff. Give yourself time to research all options available.

By making sure that you have a qualified surgeon and located at a clinic that is professional and reputable, you will be ensuring that your cosmetic procedure will be positive, effective and productive. Keep in mind, too, that most cosmetic surgeries are costly due to the expertise required for the surgical procedures. As with any surgery, there are risks. So, be sure to do the necessary research, whether the surgeon is in the UK or abroad.

Also, you may be qualified to get a personal loan from your bank or possibly refinance your home to help pay for the plastic surgery costs. Cheap cosmetic surgery can be found. All it takes is time, effort and research.

How to Date Girls That Are Wild

If you are new to dating or are striking out a lot lately, maybe it's time to review some tips on how to date girls. Let's assume that you want to date some really wild girls! You don't want a princess. You want the biker chick, the psycho, the bad girl, and maybe even the fugitive. They may be a handful but they tend to be the most passionate of lovers. Besides, there's never a dull moment when you date a wild child! Here are four tips that can help you.

about approaching your psycho chick
about approaching your psycho chick

First, be very bold about approaching your psycho chick and expressing your interest. In considering how to date girls, the approach is very important. Try and mirror her personality when making your move. If she is very blunt, then you should be very blunt. If she likes to play games, then play a few mind games with her. What matters is that you express your interest and let her know you are always an option.

Second, do not be intimidated. Wild girls don't have time for wimps. You must show yourself as a strong man that can handle her mood swings, crazy urges and overall weird behavior. If she starts teasing you (or perhaps even disrespecting you) then do it right back to her, showing you can put up a good fight. Part of understanding how to date girls is learning how to push her buttons, just as she will inevitably learn to push yours.

If she thinks she's "all that" in the looks department then remind her that you're not easily impressed. Use a "neg-hit" (a sort of back-handed compliment guys give to girls to make them self-conscious about their looks or fashion style) Whenever you joke or tease, always be friendly, and continue to hit on her, making your intentions clear. Never back down from intense eye contact. This chick thrives on intensity so you want to ask for more in everything you do.

Need more tips on how to date girls that are nuts? Then elevate the drama and tension. If she likes drama then use a push/pull system of showing interest and then backing away. Unpredictability is good and will keep her thinking about you. She likes drama, so try to be a brat as much as possible. If you really want to make her go psycho (and possibly back into your arms) then start dating one of her friends (or any woman, really) and make sure she knows about it.

Choose Natural Beauty and Skin Care Products: Protect the Health of Yourself and Your Family

It is a fact that allergic reactions, skin sensitivities, childhood eczema, adult acne and rosacea are all on the increase. It is also true that the number of personal care products has grown exponentially over the last 10 years, with most women using several different beauty products every day. Many of the chemicals contained within these products are potentially harmful, and untested in the long term. Several are linked with allergies and skin sensitivities, and some are linked to birth defects (the phthalate group) and cancers such as breast cancer. The chemicals enter the body through the skin (lotions and creams), the respiratory system (sprays and aromas) and through ingestion (lip balms and lipsticks).

If you wear lipstick you may eat sixty pounds of the stuff in a life time, and most contain artificial colours (linked to cancer, skin sensitivity, memory problems and behavioral problems; keep it away from your teenaged daughter!) as well as other carcinogenic chemicals (cancer-causing), toxic metals such as lead and aluminium, artificial perfumes and artificial sweeteners such as saccharin. If you would like to avoid ingesting this unpleasant chemical cocktail, invest in a lipstick or gloss made with natural ingredients and pigments, such as Burt's Bees Lip Shimmers http://www.myburtsbees.co.uk at around £5. Your lip balm is also usually made with chemicals such as Petroleum Jelly, yep, that's PETROLEUM as in Petrol. You may wish to switch to a more natural lip balm based on natural waxes and oils.

Children and babies are increasingly targeted by the body care industry, and many kid products will contain several of the nasty chemical ingredients listed in newsletter 65. Children and babies are most at risk from the toxicity of these chemicals as their organs are less able to process the impurities. Luckily there are many children's organic and natural products available now. I have almost completely eliminated my children's eczema by using more natural products on their skin, but just one yellow Mister men fun bubble bath, with bring them both out in rashes immediately. Tesco now do a range called Halos and Horns which avoid the use of chemical nasties. I recommend Weleda, and Lavera which can both be found in organic supermarkets, health food shops and on the internet. Sainsburys and Waitrose also stock Nature Baby Care nappies, wet wipes and travel wipes, which avoid the main nasties, and are made also without bleach. For kid-friendly first-aid, try Dr Greenfingers http://www.drgreenfingers.co.uk who also supply very handy bravery stickers.

If you are concerned about the amount of chemicals in your skin care, then there are many good products on the market which you can choose from, but sometimes they do seem more expensive. One way around this is to make your own. There are plenty of ingredients around the house which will double up as top class beauty products, and home made can also be of interest for teenage girls, and possibly provide inspiration for Christmas presents. Here are a few ideas;

o Try olive oil and salt body scrub, to smooth rough skin and exfoliate. Yes you have guessed it, all you do it add some salt to some olive oil, and rub in big circles into the skin while you are in the bath or shower. Alternatively you could use almond oil and sugar.

o Mash an avocado and apply as a moisturizing face pack (you may wish to do this when everyone is out).

o Rinse blonde hair with chamomile tea or diluted lemon juice to add highlights and shine, and rinse dark hair with dilute apple cider vinegar for shine.

o Massage lemon juice, almond oil and sugar into the finger tips to exfoliate, clean and moisturize the hand and nail.

o Make some honey conditioner with a teaspoon of honey, a teaspoon of olive oil and an egg. Massage it into the hair and scalp, wrap in a warm towel and wash off after half an hour with a mild shampoo; you may wish to use tepid water to avoid looking like an omelet. For dry hair do the same using some warm olive or almond oil.

o For tired eyes, sit back with two slices of cucumber, or some used chamomile tea bags. For conjunctivitis.

o For aching muscles and some real aromatherapy, tie some rosemary, mint, and thyme into some muslin, and steep in your bath water.

o To exfoliate, cleanse and soften skin, add some warm water to oat meal (keep it handy for your healthy breakfast), and wash the face with the resulting paste.

o For a relaxing bath, take a jar; add milk, and a few drops of lavender oil, shake well, and run under the hot tap into the bath. The milk softens the skin, and disperses the drops of oil evenly. (I use this for the kids as well).

o Make massage, bath or body oil, by adding your favorite essential oil to almond oil (available at the chemist).

o For spotty problem skin, wash with cold chamomile tea which is naturally anti bacterial.

o If you become interested in making your own cosmetics take a look at http://www.nealsyardremedies.com which has a full range of base ingredients.

If you like the idea of fewer chemicals in your beauty regime, but love beauty products, do not despair, there is a growing range of products to tempt you. Some products may be slightly more money than you are used to paying, but they often last longer, and you tend to use them more sparingly and carefully. The award-winning Skincare Café (www.skincarecafe.com) offer an enticing range of beauty Products, which are 100% free from harsh chemicals such as, parabens, sulphates, alcohol, lanolin, petrochemicals, GM, benzoates, PEG's, propylene glycol and synthetic colours or perfumes.

Other natural products such as Dr Hauschka, Weleda, and Lavera are a third cheaper to buy from Germany; try http://www.alegria-naturkosmetik.de/ for natural cosmetics, sun cream, beauty, and mother and child: order with your friends to split the cost of postage. Visit your local organic supermarket or health food shop for more ideas, and read labels carefully, as many products pretend to be healthier by tempting you with promises of essential oils, and over-using the word natural, when they are really just lots of chemicals with essential oils added. Don't forget that people did survive without hundreds of beauty products in the past, and one of the best things that you can do to stay beautiful is to drink plenty of water, and eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables (but you knew that).

Perfume and Cosmetics - Necessities in Your Cosmetic Bag

Cosmetics do not only mean beauty; it means health as well. There are many cosmetics that are a necessity to keeping yourself young and healthy. Certain products should always be found in you cosmetics bag.

First and foremost is your skin. Skin is very sensitive and needs to be taken proper care of. This involves moisturizing daily with a moisturizer or body lotion. There is no room for laziness; your skin can get very dry and cracked. Especially in the winter months, when your skin is more susceptible to getting dried out, it is essential to be on top of your skin care. Since your hands and face are the most vulnerable in the winter, special care has to be taken. This means moisturizing multiple times during the day. Every time you wash your hands, you should moisturize afterwards. Washing hands, combined with the cold weather, equals dry cracking skin.

In the summer months, it is also important to moisturize, but not nearly as often. Once or twice during the day will suffice. It is even better to get moisturizers with a little sun screen in it. This will protect your skin from the sun at the same time as moisturizing.

The lips are similar to your skin. They are also very vulnerable, and can get dry and cracked very easily. It is essential to moisturize them with lip balm or even a lip gloss. Lip gloss is a great option, because it moisturizes, glosses, and keeps your lips beautiful. In the winter months, it is crucial to gloss them often. Try your hardest not to wet or lick your lips because this can over dry them.

You may think that it is not important to apply cosmetics and perfume every day, but that is not even slightly true. Firstly, it is good to massage your skin. By applying cosmetics daily, you are doing just that. Secondly, if applying makeup after moisturizing, you are locking in the moisture to your face. And finally, mental health and beauty are important too. There is absolutely nothing wrong with applying a decent amount of perfume and cosmetics every day. It keeps you feeling young, healthy, and beautiful.

So go ahead. Moisturize your skin, and apply perfume and cosmetics every day. Your skin does not need to age just because you are. Take good care of yourself with the right perfume and cosmetics for you. Keep yourself young and beautiful.

The Right Anti Aging Complex Comes From the Ocean - The Ocean and Your Beauty Skin Care Products

Sit back and think about beauty skin care products. Now think of caviar. Can you find any reason to link caviar to beauty skin care products?

If you answered NO to the question, then it is with good reason. Who would even think about putting those two things together? Yet, I have a secret to tell you. Caviar is the main ingredient to this anti aging complex. It is such an intense anti aging complex that it can literally take years off your face with just a few weeks of use. The strength of this cosmetic can only be found in caviar skin care creams.

This cream helps to heal and improve the health of the skin. It also has amazing abilities to heal the environmental damage often found in skin of older individuals.

Cosmetics made with caviar, were actually discovered by mistake. A European woman was once walking alone along the seaside and saw a few women cleaning fish. She also noticed that they were removing the caviar from the fish. What caught her attention was the obvious difference between the weathered look of their faces versus the smoothness of their hands. She knew it had something to do with the fish. Her later discovery would change the cosmetic industry forever. Her research led to a breakthrough in beauty skin care.

After this discovery, many manufactures of cosmetics began to use caviar as their main ingredient. By adding caviar to their cosmetics, it solved a lot of their problems. Here is a list of some of the issues that were eliminated by adding caviar.

- The use of foundation cosmetics did conflict with any caviar skin care products. It blended well and often times enhanced the use of the foundation cosmetic.

- Allergic reactions and acne outbreaks, a common problem with other cosmetics, were not a problem with this kind of beauty and skin care cream.

- Even under the heaviest foundation cosmetics, caviar creams would continue working. It was found to still deliver a refreshing amount of nutrient deep into the layers of the skin, promoting new cell regeneration.

Manufactures found it to be a win/win situation. Not only were the manufactures able to make a lot more money with this new breakthrough, but the consumer would also benefit in so many different ways. There have been several different kinds of creams, but little has been more effective or accepted than the using caviar.

Now something to note and quite interesting, is the main contributor to this cosmetic revolution are Russian cosmetic companies. While other contributors from Europe have been noted, Russians manufacture beauty products with quality that is surpassed by no other. Their market share in the world of cosmetics speaks for itself.

Where other cosmetic companies are filling their products with synthetics and components that are not natural, Russian companies stick to what works well for them. They are well known for using all natural ingredients. Success with this strategy is noted and they continue the efforts with a lineup of caviar products. The percentage of natural ingredients is very important thing to consider when focusing on your beauty and skin care strategy. How Russia can improve in this area will be interesting to see, but for the present, they lead the fight in aging with their anti aging complex cosmetics.

The main thing to remember about a cosmetic with something like caviar, it can and will lead to the regeneration of the skin cells. Wrinkles and sagging skin is directly related to the death of your skin cells. If you find that your skin is at this stage, then you can be certain cosmetics with caviar can and will help your skin heal and look younger.

Dermatologists and Cosmetics - What Are the Secrets?

Dermatologists have an advantage when choosing makeup - they know what ingredients are beneficial and which should be avoided. Finding out what makeup they wear helps us to figure out which makeup might be best for our skin as well.

There are several brands of makeup that are favored by dermatologists. It might be because they feature more natural ingredients, they include ingredients that help your skin stay healthy, or they are simply high quality and beneficial to the skin. Let's look at a few.

Proactiv - The skin care line was developed by two dermatologists and the makeup is an extension of the skin care line of the same name. Designed to provide sheer coverage, the makeup also contains salicylic acid, which helps to reduce the development of acne. This isn't inexpensive makeup, but some dermatologists recommend it because it provides that protection from the development of more acne, so it really works in tandem with the skin care line.

Neutrogena - In recent years, this skin care line released a line of bestselling makeup. Although the line includes lipstick and eye products, the real appeal is in the foundations and powders, which feature natural ingredients and the quality that Neutrogena fans have come to expect. Neutrogena is one of the most dermatologist-recommended brands.

Avon - This line of makeup - previously sold only by independent Avon consultants and now available online - is often recommended by dermatologists and many of the products are developed in conjunction with input from dermatologists. Because Avon has a huge product line, it's best to read the product descriptions carefully. Anyone with skin issues will want to make sure the product they choose contains the beneficial ingredients they need.

You might notice that the most recommended products by dermatologists aren't the most expensive brands. They aren't the expensive brands sold by celebrities and that you can purchase only at high-end departments store counters.

Many of the best products are those sold at drugstores and by independent consultants (such as Mary Kay, another brand that is often looked upon favorably by dermatologists). When you purchase your makeup, you are really looking for high-quality ingredients and a mix that will work for you. In other words, what works for one person might not work for another. You have to try a few to find out which will work for your particular skin.

It's also important to look for makeup that contains ingredients that will be beneficial. Have oily skin? Try to find makeup that contains salicylic acid, which helps to deflect the development of acne. Looking for a product with antiaging properties? Look for makeup that contains antioxidants, which help your skin to deal with the many environmental stresses it faces.
